1:    Apple updated the iMac line of desktop computers early Tuesday morning.  The updated line includes many improvements and even 2 brand new additions to the line which now includes 4 iMac models.  This pre holiday season is set to be a grand slam for Apple.
    The line now features 4 units all fitted with intel’s top of the line mobile chip the Core 2 Duo.  All also feature upgrades via the Configure to Order option.  Here is the basic line up.

17-inch 1.83 GHz iMac ($999)
-17-inch widescreen LCD display;
-1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor;
-512MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM expandable to 2GB;
-24x Combo drive;
-Intel GMA 950 graphics;

So the biggest upgrade is the inclusion of a brand new 24� imac that has 30% more viewable area than the 20�, is 40% brighter than the 20� and is also 1.5 x faster than the replaced Core Duo 20’ iMac.
Here are some features and upgrades to point out.

ALL units include the Intel Core 2 Duo
3 Units now feature 1 GB of RAM standard
3 Units are upgradeable to 3 GB of RAM
3 Units have upgrades available to the processor.  the 17â€? to 2.16 and the 20â€? and 24â€? to 2.33.
The 24� model and 20� models have upgrades available to 256 MB of VRAM
The 24’ model features 1 Firewire 400 and 1 Firewire 800
The 24â€? model comes standard with an Nvidia Gforce 7300 and is upgradable to a Nvida 7700 GT that may be in a MXM slot.  here is the skinny on this...
Macsimumnews reports that the new 24" iMac incorporates a Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) connector for its video card. The use of this standard connector potentially means that the video card in the newest iMac is upgradeable.

The 24� also reintroduces the Apple Vesa Mount Adapter.

As you see this may be the best consumer lineup Apple has gone to battle with for the Holiday season.  But this is only the tip of the iceberg...

2:    While the iMacs were in the shop getting “tricked outâ€?, the mac mini received an upgrade also.  Here are the specs...


Mac mini 1.66Ghz ($599)
- 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor
- 2MB L2 Cache
- 667MHz Frontside Bus
- 512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
- 60GB Serial ATA hard drive¹

While the specs do not seem as impressive as the iMac line, there is now a clear separation of the two lines of computers.  The iMac now takes a seat as Apple’s Prosumer workhorse and the mac mini takes over the consumer line.  Some extra power, the discontinuance of the Core Solo and Hard Drive upgrades to 160 GB.  All for under $800...  and if you need a screen too Get the $999 iMac.

3:    Apple invites the Media again.  This time it is “Showtimeâ€?.  With the announcements of the iMac and mac min upgrades it seems that the initial speculation of new iPods may have been correct.  We’ll take a wait and see attitude as speculation of future Apple products almost always comes up off base.
4.    Amazon to sell movies.  The Amazon Digital Download service has gone online.  Vidoes are available for sale from $7.99 to $14.99 and for rent for 24 hours for $3.99.
Since finding this story there have been reports stating that this service is anything but user friendly.  These reports come from writers and editors of major tech magazines and not just everyday users.  I know that new services have teething pains.  Just look at Urge... But to not work at all and still take your money.  I would highly recommend not buying videos through Amazon until we here a full non-biased review.

5.    Elgato releases Eye-TV Hybrid.  I found this item while searching through the message boards on Apple Insider.  The nature of this product is inputting High Quality Analog or Digital T.V. to your Macintosh Computer.  The product is listed as being Available week 2 of September.  This intrigues me as I have just spent my hard earned cash on a 24â€? iMac and having it double as a T.V. in my office would be a good thing.  My office right now has a 17â€? iMac with a 17â€? secondary display, 2 printers, a Vonage device, and Airport Extreme and a 25â€? T.V..  It would be good to get rid of the T.V. since the 17â€? iMac is staying as my wife’s computer.

Here is the skinny on the Eye T.V. Hybrid.  it has a form factor similar to a usb wireless network adapter.
It can handle both Analog and Digital signals
it has a USB extension cable for  better placement
The package comes with Elagatos High Quality Eye TV 2 DV recording and play back software which even includes option to export to iPod and psp.

Episode 45:  Googapple or Appoogle

Opening...  A quiet week at first and then ...

News:
1)  Googles CEO Eric Schmidt joins Apple Board of Directors.  Speculate the �whys?� and �what for?�s all you want.  This is a good thing for Apple and now you see a very interesting web beginning to form. 
Pixar is acquired by Disney and the purchase makes Steve Jobs the largest single holder of Disney stock.
Eric Schmidt joins Apple�s Board right after the new Google Office online is previewed.

Interesting indeed!   I wonder what Apple, Disney, and Google can do to the world as a team.

2)    Neo Office goes Universal and Aqua.  Now yet another way to replace the Bloated MS Office on your mac.  Currently there are many applications that an mac user can use to replace the different programs bundled in Offive 2004. 
Writely (recently purchased by Google) replace Word with an online interactive collaborative word processor.
Tables recently entered beta and does extremely well at replacing excell for the average user.
Apple�s own Appleworks and iWork both are great packages that replace most of what you do in office.
Neo Office is a free, OS X ready version of Open Office.  It is compatible with most office documents and is currently available for Power PC based macs.  An intel version is currently in testing and has been released as a beta.

3)  New macs... None yet, however, rumors abound this time of year.  My advice!...... Do not get caught up in rumors or speculation.  Apple never comments on unreleased or unannounced products so all you hear this time of year is unsubstantiated rumors.

4)   New content on iTunes.  There is a constant influx of new content on iTunes.  Bob Dylan has released his entire collection to iTunes for sale.  Also new T.V. shows and other video content is on sale.  Head over to the iTunes Music Store for more info.

5)  Apple reduces the cost of the ATI X1900 graphics card and upgrade for Mac Pro.  The Card alone was reduced from $499 to $399 and the upgrade to the Mac Pro�s existing card was reduced from $350 to $250.  Shipping times still show 3 to 4 weeks.

6)  Microsoft starts Mac business Unit Blog.

News Items.

1>  OS 10.4.7 Updated.  last week Apple updated OS X Tiger to Version 10.4.7.  There were many fixes and enhancements so make sure that you run software update to update your computer to this new version. 
One thing to note on this release is that the Open GL drivers were updated and you will see an improvement in game performance.  I am a gamer and I play World of Warcraft and the new Civilization IV and have seen a great performance increase on both.  One procedure that may help you is reinstalling old Games after this release.  I ran WoW right after the update and saw some improvement, I then reinstalled the game after reading a thread on Blizzard’s website and saw a marked improvement in graphics performance.

2> Another security Flaw/Virus.  It was reported by Symantec that there was a security flaw in OS 10.4.6 that could allow someone to take control of your desktop.  This of course was announced after Apple released the 10.4.7 update that fixed this flaw. 

3>  Sid Meier’s Civilization IV comes to Mac.  Aspyr release Civilization IV Sid Meier’s latest release of the Civilization Franchise sports a brand new Graphic enviroment as well as speedier play,  The game itself has been out for some time on the PC and now comes to the mac thanks to Aspyr,  You can take control of many Civilizations and lead them on the path to victory.  Victory Conditions can be Conquest, Cultural, Space Race or be elected as Supreme Leader by the UN.  Go to http://www.aspyr.com/games.php/mac/civ4/   for more information.

4> eMac meet your Replacement.  Apple release a new Educational Computer on July 5th.  The replacement for the eMac is the new iMac for Education.  The new system sports the same design as current imac models and comes in a 17â€? screen only.  At a street price of $899 it is by far the most affordable Apple complete system.  The system feature the sames specs as the low end Macbook, however, with an 80 GB hard drive.  Here are the specs, 1.83 GHz Core Duo, 512 MB DDR2 RAM, 80 GB HD, integrated Intel GMA950 Graphics, 17â€? display and all the loving things that Apple adds to the iMac line.

5>  Steve Jobs to unveil OS X 10.5 Leopard at this years WWDC.  Steve Jobs will be demonstrating OS X 10.5 Leopard on August 7, 2006 as the WWDC begins.  The last time he did this was two summers ago when Tiger was demonstrated.  The fact that the OS is being demonstrated means nothing when considering the release date.  When Tiger was demonstrated in June on 2004 it took until April of 2005 before it was released.  Remember the WWDC is to show of new and existing technologies to the developers.  If they do not have the OS now then it will be some time before you will see support for it if it was released.  With that said, August 7th will be a very informative day.  I CAN’T WAIT.

6>  Microsoft to Release iPod Killer in November.  Ha Ha Ha!  LOL  This is too reported.  Read it elsewhere.  I am tired of iPod killer stories.  I look at them as filler for slow tech new days.

7>  Cross Over to bring Wine to OS X... Well intel based macs.  Cross Over is an application that when installed on your system as long as it has an intel chip will allow you to run certain Windows based programs right out of the Applications directory even without Windows being installed.  Linux Users call this wine and it does work with some programs.  With Bootcamp and Parallels already being in the market I am sure there will be a dozen other applications very soon that offer Windows compatibility on intel based macs.

8> Intel release the Woodcrest processor otherwise known as the Xeon.  This long awaited brings 64 bit dual core performance to intels main server chip.  One thing to look out for is if this will someday power Apple’s Xserve line of servers.

  2. Retry your iPod with a different USB or FireWire port on your computer (please note that the latest iPods can only be synced through USB).

  3. Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.
  4. Reinstall your iPod and iTunes software. You can download the latest versions of iPod Updater and iTunes from our website.

This show has been a long time coming.  I have been Macless for days.  I sold my iMac on Sunday on a whim and ordered a new Intel based iMac on Monday.  I figured it would be easy to produce my podcast on my 800MHz iBook G4.  I was wrong.  The system had a hard drive failure and it had to be shipped to Apple Care.  I received it back Friday and went to work.  So here we are Saturday Morning, 3 days late and almost done.  Ironically, my new iMac at this moment is on a FedEX truck on its' way to my house.

New Content on iTunes. The Daily Show being offered at $9.99 for all 16 episodes in a month. This feature is calle the Multipass.

Email from Carlton Barnett. He asks how to install Front Page on a Mac. To answer this I give 3 options for low cost feature filled Web Creation utilites.

iWeb which is included in iLife '06 .

Rapidweaver is another feature rich application. This one allows the insertion of html code in your website. Check out the site for Screencast Online to see an example of what can be done with this product.

Karelia is developing Sandvox which is in beta. This product like the other two uses AJAX which is a combination of XML and Java to produce professional looking pages.

How to get your voice heard on Peter's Mac Tips. If you want to leave audio comments or ask questions just start up a new Garage Band session, add a new Real Instrument and choose vocals and record your comment or question. Choose send to iTunes from here. In iTunes go into preferences and choose advanced and importing. Change the option to mp3 and use a custom bit rate of 64k. After this right click or control click on your file in iTunes and choose convert to mp3. Attach the mp3 to an email and send it through to me.

1 Move to Libsyn

1.1 Libsyn (Liberated Syndication) is a a service that offers you all the tools needed to post a podcast and then manage it. The true benefit of Libsyn is that the Podcaster pays for storage and not the bandwidth used. This is unique and one of the main reasons I am moving to podcast to Libsyn.

1.2 Moving to Libsyn was not without the expected issues. Paypal was slow in processing my payment and Libsyn's customer support email was down so it took from Tuesday night at 9:00PM to Friday night to get my account set up. None of this was Libsyns fault, in fact, after hearing of my issue I received a call from one of the Dave's who had me up and running within 15 minutes.

2.1 If you do not know what skype is than here goes. Skype is a VOIP service that runs through your computer and offers you direct computer to computer voice communication between computers anywhere in the world for free. For a fee they will offer computer to phone or phone to computer services.

Slow week for news. Lots of rumors abound but news was light. Apple saw a drop in stock price when the market saw a pullback from tech stocks, however, with the announcement of new iPods and the imminent shipping of the MacBook Pro we have only more good things from Apple to look forward to.

Podcaster sells 5 15 second spots on Podcast for $40,000. Something I have not seen done before but something I am sure will be all over eBay by the time you hear this podcast. This from Podcasterconfessions.com Podcast #3

Connect360 syncs Mac with Xbox 360 Nullriver has released Connect360, an application for Mac OS X that allows an Xbox 360 to play back music and view digital photos stored on a Macintosh. "Connect360 automatically indexes your iTunes and iPhoto libraries and shares them to your Xbox 360. You can then use the Xbox 360 Dashboard to browse and play your media, organized in the exact same way that it is on your Mac." Connect360 keeps the Xbox up to date as content is added or removed from the iTunes library, and the application supports MP3 audio files alongside JPEG photos. A built-in access control list can limit which Xbox 360s can connect to a Mac, and the software supports wireless connections as well as the Xbox's built-in network port. Connect360 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, and is priced at $10.

Intel Macs can boot from USB drives Posted Feb 8th 2006 5:00PM by David Chartier Filed under: Hardware, OS, Peripherals, Software Last week Dan posted about the new complications of Intel OS X drives not being bootable on PowerPC Macs, and vice-versa. The report came from Jon 'Wolf' Rentzsch, who recently updated the originating post with some specifics about booting and partition schemes, with one fairly positive detail: Intel based Macs can boot from USB2 drives. While many in the Mac community prefer FireWire over USB2 for various reasons, this will nevertheless open the doors for OS X to be bootable from more external hard drives. What are the chances I can bring a slimmed down OS X installation along with me on a 2 or 4 GB USB2 flash drive? I guess a geek can dream.

Lexus recall brings iPod nano windfall Posted by Lab Rat Macenstein reader I Drive a Hyundai sent in a posting he came across on the Club Lexus forums stating that some people who purchased the IS250 AWD model last month, but were forced to wait for delivery due to a recall, have received 2GB iPod nanos as gifts “for being a valued member of the Lexus family�. This is great news for all the poor and disadvantaged Lexus owners who cannot afford nanos. From the Forums: “I bought my IS250AWD last month. Because of a recall, my pick up date was postponed one week (I got a loaner car - ES330 at that time). Anyways, I just got home and see a package; I received a letter from Lexus as well as 2GB iPod Nano and XtremeMac Aux. cable - all in appreciation of my time and understanding as well as for being a valued member of the Lexus family (although this is my first Lexus). Apple renews Henrico iBook contract Apple has renewed a contract to supply Henrico County middle school students with new iBooks for another four years, beating out Dell and other PC makers. The new Apple contract follows a controversial school board decision last April that chose Dell to supply computers to every high school student and teacher next year. The four-year iBook program renewal, which begins on July 30th, is for 12,675 iBook laptops at a cost of $1,246 each. The report notes that Apple's bid was higher than an expired Dell bid from last year that offered 14,000 machines to middle schools at a cost of $1,111 per unit; however, that bid expired on November 1, 2005 and the Times Dispatch did not provide any details as to why the higher bid from Apple was approved Thursday night by the School Board.

Friday, February 10, 2006 news@insidemacgames.com Halo 2 Coming To Windows Vista (Updated) 12:50 PM | Cord Kruse | 22 comments Microsoft recently announced that Halo 2 will be coming to PC as a Windows Vista only title. Halo 2 is the sequel to the popular first person shooter epic and continues the story of Master Chief's struggle against Earth's enemies. A Microsoft Game Studios team, in partnership with Bungie, will port the game to Vista, Microsoft's upcoming new operating system due later this year. The title will include both Halo 2 and the multiplayer map pack. In "Halo 2" for Windows Vista, the action picks up where the first game ended. Master Chief, with the help of a small group of marines, has destroyed the religious artifact and artificial world known as "Halo," and is making his way back to Earth. There, he and the last surviving Earth forces will mount a titanic struggle against the marauding Covenant enemy. Whether or not Halo 2's status as a Windows Vista game will prevent the possibility of an eventual Mac version remains to be seen. Keep an eye on IMG for more information. Update: Bungie.net has posted an article about the upcoming Vista version of Halo 2. Towards the end of the article, a mention about a Mac version is made: There's loads of questions the Bungie faithful will ask, like, "Will there be a Mac version?" We can't answer that yet. It's not out of the question, but it's not definitely happening either. We promise to keep you posted. So while this not good news for Mac gamers, it at least shows that Bungie is aware of Mac gamers and their desire to play Halo 2 on a Mac. We'll be sure to keep you posted.

4 Most Ridiculous Story

4.1 The Story below is not ridiculous in it's content is is actually cool. But when you thing of the clean sleek look of OS X Tiger running in a 20 year old Mac Plus with a black and white screen you can find something to laugh at. Regardless of this, the Mod is cool and I wish I had the skills to try one of these someday.

4.1.1 Mac Minitosh Saturday February 4, 2006 1:17 PM EST We wrote an article about the Mac mini SE/30 mod earlier this week. Now, we give you El Toozero's Mac Minitosh mod for your viewing pleasure. "I have put a Mac mini inside of a Macintosh Plus. I have been waiting months (literally) to do a writeup on this. Now someone else has built one. My mod works fantastic, and is looks 99% stock from the outside, USB where the RJ-11 used to be, and all other ports (ethernet, firewire) are hidden behind the batter cover," writes El Toozero. "According to several different support threads over at Microsoft's user groups forum, the latest definitions file from Microsoft '(version 5805, 5807) detects Symantec Antivirus files as PWS.Bancos.A (Password Stealer).'" "When Microsoft Anti-Spyware users remove the flagged Norton file as prompted, Symantec's product gets corrupted and no longer protects the user's machine.
